McLaren 720S: Wrapping with Polyurethane Paint Protection Film

The McLaren hypercar impresses with its sporty shapes and bright body colors. Immediately after purchase, the body shines perfectly and attracts the attention of everyone around. To keep it that way, it’s important to think about protecting the paintwork in a timely manner.

Why is additional coating essential? From the very first days of driving, the car will begin to wear out gradually, and after several months of use, noticeable scratches and scuffs will appear on the body. Yes, they can be removed by polishing, but only temporarily. To keep the body scratch-free, polishing will have to be done constantly. This is impractical and not at all favorable for the paintwork.

Another option to keep the car in perfect condition is to apply a protective film. This coating requires no maintenance and will reliably protect the body from potential damage. This is exactly why the McLaren 720 came to the CarEngineering studio for film application. The specialists selected a coating package based on the client’s wishes and reliably protected the supercar from scratches and scuffs. We invite you to see how it was done.

Why is film the best option for paint protection?

Several types of coatings are used in detailing: ceramic, liquid glass, and film. Each of them has its own purpose and varying effectiveness in combating unwanted damage.

Liquid glass and ceramic are lacquer sealants that are often applied to the body after polishing. The level of protection provided by these coatings is only noticeable against oxidizers and ultraviolet radiation. If a small stone accidentally hits the body, ceramic and liquid glass will prove useless. Moreover, these coatings require constant care and renewal. The ceramic layer will need replacing after just a year of use.

Film is a coating with a certain thickness and special protective properties. Unlike ceramic and liquid glass, film can protect the McLaren from both chemical and mechanical damage.

It’s important to note that there are different types of films. They should be chosen based on the purpose of your wrapping and specific wishes. In our studio, you can wrap your car in vinyl or polyurethane.

Choosing vinyl for the McLaren is worth it if you want to change the exterior appearance of the body. The film comes in a vast array of shades, textures, patterns, and designs. You can experiment with the design endlessly.

The protective properties of vinyl cannot be considered the best among other films. A thickness of 100-150 microns provides protection against ultraviolet light, chemicals, branches, bushes, sand, insect marks, and bird droppings. The film will protect the car during careless washing, but a stone hitting the body is more likely to damage the coating.

That’s why we recommend vinyl to clients who primarily want wrapping for styling purposes. In this case, the protective properties of vinyl will be a good advantage for the car’s unique exterior.

When it comes to comprehensive body protection, it’s worth considering polyurethane film. It is considered the most effective for protecting a car.

Polyurethane film is not afraid of:

  • branches and bushes;
  • sand;
  • gravel and crushed stone;
  • mold;
  • resins;
  • oils;
  • road reagents;
  • cleaning chemicals;
  • salts;
  • traces of bird droppings and insects.

And this is not an exhaustive list. If the McLaren is covered in polyurethane film, you won’t need to worry about the car’s condition during careless washing, minor accidents, and random body contact with other vehicles. All scratches and scuffs will remain on the film and won’t reach the paintwork. Moreover, over time, defects will disappear on their own—this is one of the unique features of polyurethane.

Since polyurethane film shares properties with rubber, the coating can return to its original state when heated. In practice, this works very simply—if the car sits in the sun for several hours, the film will become perfectly smooth and glossy again. If you choose clear polyurethane, this property will help it remain inconspicuous on the body throughout the entire period of use—between 5 to 8 years.

Among other advantages of polyurethane, one can highlight its resistance to low and high temperatures, as well as temperature fluctuations. Regardless of the season, the film will reliably protect the car from damage.

You can trust CarEngineering specialists with your choice of coating. The master will listen to your wishes and individually select the film for your car. You can be sure about the quality of the film. Our studio collaborates with official suppliers of premium materials.

How to wrap a car in film: understanding the difference between full and partial wrapping

To get ahead of ourselves, we note that the client chose full wrapping for the McLaren. This is a good solution for reliable car protection. When fully wrapped:

  • all parts are evenly protected by the film;
  • the risks of damage to unwrapped parts are eliminated;
  • there is no difference in wear between wrapped and unwrapped parts.

Full wrapping should also be chosen if you decide to wrap the McLaren in vinyl. Colored film requires complete coverage; otherwise, the result will look incomplete.

In our studio, you can also opt for partial wrapping of your car. This involves covering only the risk areas with film: bumpers, hoods, headlights, windshield pillars, mirror caps, and front fenders. The cups under the door handles are wrapped as a gift with the package.

This package is not as effective as full wrapping, but it can be improved. If you choose partial wrapping, the rest of the body can be coated with ceramic. Yes, ceramic won’t provide as much protection as film, but it will offer minimal protection against chemicals and ultraviolet light. This is better than leaving the McLaren completely unprotected.

Additionally, we offer a service to cover chrome elements with black vinyl film as part of every wrapping package. What are the advantages of this service? First of all, small elements such as the grille, window frames, door handles, moldings, and brand inscriptions will be protected from scratches and corrosion.

Anti-chrome should be done even if you simply don’t like the look of chrome elements—the service will never be unnecessary.

Regardless of whether you choose polyurethane or vinyl for your McLaren, full or partial wrapping, trust your cars to reliable services. Features of supercar wrapping: main stages and results

We have already discussed how the wrapping service begins—together with the client, specialists select the coating and wrapping package. After agreeing on all details, the masters begin preparing the vehicle.

First, the masters remove bumpers, door handles, and other plastic elements from the body, if necessary. Disassembly allows for better film application on the body and separate elements. It is essential for any wrapping job.

We guarantee the safety of disassembly. Experienced masters who specialize in disassembling vehicles of any class work on the car. After full wrapping, all removed elements are returned to their places.

The car is washed in several stages. The more thoroughly the body is cleaned of dirt and grease, the better the result will be.

When the McLaren 720S is fully prepared, the film application begins. The service can be divided into several main stages:

  1. Cutting the film to fit each part.
  2. Wrapping the entire body and removed elements in film.
  3. Smoothing the coating to perfect flatness.
  4. Removing excess edges of the film with a special tool.
  5. Tucking.
  6. Drying the film.

Let’s take a closer look at the stage of tucking. The wrapping technology with tucking improves the reliability of the car’s protection. Since the edge of the film is on the inner side of the part, it is practically impossible to lift it under strong water pressure or tear it with a stone. Tucking is done during every wrapping at our studio.

CarEngineering is a place where every service is performed with care for your vehicle. We strive for the best results and consider all wishes to ensure the wrapping turns out as well as possible.

At the vehicle delivery stage, our meeting doesn’t end. After a week, we invite you to visit the CarEngineering studio for post-service maintenance. We will wash the car for free and inspect the wrapping results once again.
