BMW 5 Wrapping with Polyurethane Paint Protection Film

Wrap your BMW 5 in film, and your bodywork will be reliably protected for many years. The BMW 5 has a massive and powerful appearance. Fresh from the showroom, it gleams in the sunlight, proudly showcasing itself on the road and drawing envious looks from others. To keep that shine from fading over time and to prevent stones from other cars, sand, tree branches, or careless washing from leaving scratches and scuffs on the paintwork, it’s worth thinking about protecting your BMW 5’s body in advance. The most effective way to do this is with anti-gravel film.

The variety of colors and textures available allows you to not only effectively protect your car from damage but also give it a desired accent. If you opt for a clear film, it will remain invisible on the BMW 5 while enhancing its gloss. A matte, pearl, or colored film can drastically change its appearance.

Reasons to choose anti-gravel film

There are several ways to protect your vehicle: ceramic coating, liquid glass, and film (vinyl or polyurethane). Each of these methods serves a different purpose and offers varying degrees of protection for the car’s bodywork.

Ceramic and liquid glass are lacquer sealants, often used to restore the body after polishing. The protection these coatings offer is minimal: they primarily shield against chemical agents and UV rays. Their short lifespan (up to 2 years) and the need for constant maintenance make liquid glass and ceramics expensive and ineffective for body protection. Even a small stone striking the car will easily penetrate the coating and leave a scratch.

A more reliable option is film. It protects the car’s body from scratches and scuffs, harmful chemicals, organic contaminants, and UV rays. While it won’t provide full protection from large rocks, it can withstand small stones, keeping the body intact.

Benefits of anti-gravel film for the BMW 5:

  • It can enhance the appearance of the car.
  • Reliable protection against mechanical, chemical, and UV damage.
  • It preserves the car’s new look for 3–8 years.
  • When removed in time, it leaves no marks on the body.
  • No special maintenance is required during its lifespan.

Types of film and the differences between them

At Carengineering, we offer several film options: polyurethane and vinyl.

Polyurethane film

With a thickness ranging from 150 to 210 microns, it withstands damage from stones thrown up by other cars during movement. The film protects the body from sandblasting, tree branches, careless washing, harsh chemicals in cleaning agents, anti-icing agents, bird droppings, and tree sap. By wrapping your car in polyurethane, you can be confident that the paintwork is well-protected.

Polyurethane is resistant to temperature changes, providing consistent protection year-round, regardless of weather conditions. Even with abrupt temperature fluctuations, the film won’t crack or deform.

One of polyurethane’s key features is self-healing. After some time, the first scratches will appear on the film, but thanks to its self-healing properties, these scratches will disappear on their own when the film is heated. For example, if you leave your car under the hot sun in the summer, you’ll notice that the scratches have vanished after a few hours.

Other advantages of polyurethane film include its long service life, protecting the car for 5–8 years, without requiring special maintenance.

Vinyl film

Vinyl film is often chosen to change the car’s color, offering a wide palette—from deep black to various bright shades, including khaki and chameleon effects. Vinyl doesn’t match polyurethane in protection, with a thickness of 100 to 150 microns, making it more susceptible to stone damage. However, it still offers good protection from sand, tree branches, careless washing, and chemical exposure.

Unlike polyurethane, vinyl doesn’t have self-healing properties, meaning scratches remain visible up close. Its service life is 2–3 years, shorter than polyurethane, but this could be an advantage for those who want to experiment with the car’s appearance more frequently. If the primary goal is protection, polyurethane is the better choice.

For the BMW 5, the selected film was clear polyurethane. It ensures reliable protection and remains invisible.

At Carengineering, we offer full car wrapping, covering all body elements for maximum protection. Full wrapping is recommended if the car is used daily, as unwrapped parts are more vulnerable to damage.

Wrapping process at Carengineering

The process takes 5–6 days and includes preparation, application, and drying of the film. The steps include washing, degreasing, disassembling necessary parts, cutting the film to fit, applying it, smoothing it out, and trimming excess film. Once the wrapping is complete, the car is left to dry, with a final inspection to ensure everything is perfect. For other services, such as multimedia installations or advanced security systems, Carengineering offers a range of options. Visit our website for more details.
